Chapter 10
Family breakfast
1
On Monday morning when the Mansion already had basic services, Emile got up very early, after spending a terrible night.
Since Saturday afternoon when she was in the bathtub and felt that caress accompanied by a strange whisper, she had been unable to sleep. And last night after remembering that there was a tombstone in the garden of her house, it was not for less. She had planned to speak with Kent very seriously about that matter and, if necessary, ask the authorities for information. But every time she was about to tell him, the words piled up in her throat. It was as if a pair of foreign hands strangled her neck, to prevent her from speaking more than was strictly necessary.
Arriving at the kitchen, Emile prepared breakfast for her husband and daughters; some scrambled eggs with Portobello mushrooms and bacon, very well accompanied by baked wholemeal bread and a glass with pear juice, would be enough.
After setting the table, as usual, went to knock on the door of the girls so they were waking up. Sandra usually helped her little sister to get dressed, but in the last months, she was very reluctant for that and any other task. Her character had changed markedly, growing agitated and aspersed, so that Emile found herself in the task of paying full attention to little Danna.
âGood morning my girls! Dad is dressing and if you donât hurry, youâll be late for school.â Cherry covered her head with the blankets, hiding her face between the sheets. Emile went to the girl's bed and discovered nothing more than her eyes. âWhat's wrong?â
âCherry says she canât sleep since we movedâ Danna commented with a sweet little voice, taking off her pyjamas so she only was wearing pink ponies undies, âShe says sheâs very afraid of this place; and more after seeing the little door with lettersâ
Sandra had come into the girls' bedroom, to rush her mother with breakfast. While in the doorway, she heard the girls' conversation with her mother, and she could not help but join the conversation.
âIt's not a small door Dannaâ Sandra answered annoyed; she hated the naivety of her silly sisters âIt's a...â
âIt is a forbidden door that is better not to touchâ Emile interrupted her, frowning. Sandra turned away from her eyes before teasing her mother. If she told them what had happened there years ago, nobody would believe her. But Ronald that attractive guy was so brave and rude; he knew the whole town as if he were an old soul. âMy girlsâ Emile expressed with another tone of voice, extending her arms so that they approached her, but Cherry hid again between the blankets âI know it's not the best place to live, but dad is very excited about this new change and we do not want him to be sad, right?â Cherry nodded with a beautiful smile and then kissed her mother on the cheek taking it from her hands like someone playing the children's round.
